BYU to play in 2023 National Invitational Softball Championship
PROVO, Utah — Following a 32-16 regular-season finish, BYU softball will play San José State in the 2023 National Invitational Softball Championship (NISC), hosted by Triple Crown Sports in Fort Collins, Colorado.
The Cougars went 11-4 in WCC play and finished second in the conference behind Loyola Marymount, who earned the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Added as a permanent season-ending event for softball by the NCAA last summer, the NISC ran from 2017-2019 before taking a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19. Future Big 12 opponent Baylor took home the 2022 NISC title last season in the tournament’s return.
BYU will join seven other teams in the NISC: Cal State Northridge, Iowa, Maryland, San José State, South Dakota State, Tarleton State and UC Davis.
Running from May 18-20, the NISC will be held at Triple Crown’s TC Colorado Fields. With the organization unveiling a second diamond this year, all games will take place on either Red Rocks Field or Horsetooth Field.
Consisting of two four-team pods that will play a double-elimination slate, winners of the NISC’s two winner’s brackets and loser’s brackets will advance to a single-elimination championship bracket.
