Tobias Twirls a Gem
HOUSTON -- Pitching led to a BYU victory over Texas State, 1-0, in the Cougars weather-decided tournament finale Saturday afternoon at the Crowne Plaza Classic.
BYU (10-4) won its early morning game but was unable to finish its scheduled last game against Rhode Island due to rain. The Cougars game was cancelled in the third inning because of a 5 p.m. flight home.
BYU got a pitching gem out of Summer Tobias against Texas State. The Cougar bats only mustered one run, but it was plenty as Tobias pitched her second complete-game shut out of the season. Overall, Tobias has been part of all three of BYU's shutout victories. Tobias gave up only four hits while striking out five and walking none in the victory.
The Cougars appeared to be off to a good start when they loaded the bases with two outs in the first inning. Texas State pitcher Katie Ann Trahan was able to strike out the side to prevent BYU from starting with a big inning.
In the second inning, BYU once again got two runners aboard with one out but were once again unable to come up with the hits when they mattered and came up empty. Meanwhile, Tobias was already in cruise control having retired the first eight batters she faced.
It wasn't until the fifth inning when BYU played small ball to get a run. Jennifer Whiteley led off the inning with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and took third on a wild pitch. Krystle Chamberlain was able to get the ball up in the air for a sacrifice fly as Whiteley scored the game's only run.
Tobias only game up one more hit the rest of the game to seal the victory from the pitcher's circle.
BYU will make a return trip to Texas when it heads to the Texas A&M Invitational beginning next Thursday.
