Cougars Roll Past Southern Utah
OREM -- Solid pitching and hot hitting helped the BYU (22-19) softball team roll past Southern Utah (19-24), 4-0 and 12-0, Friday afternoon at Utah Valley State College. The game was originally planned to be the first at Gail Miller Field but was moved due to field conditions.
In the first game, neither team could find the offensive groove as BYU pitcher Meghann Pricer and Southern Utah pitcher Lori Sheppard allowed no runs through the first five innings. In the bottom of the sixth, Oli Keohohou singled in Liz Smith and scored herself before Jackie Ellis drove in two runs to putting the Cougars up 4-0. Pricer (8-4) went the distance, allowing only two hits while striking out nine.
"We started a little slow but really got rolling," head coach Mary Kay Amicone said. "The girls were a little disappointed about not being able to play at the new stadium, but I'm pleased they were able to keep their focus and play hard."
It didn't take BYU nearly as long to get on the board in the second game as Keohohou drove in a run on a sacrifice fly and Brooke Cadiente doubled home another run to put the Cougars up 2-0 after the first inning. A three-run home run by Cadiente in the third broke the game open as BYU increased its lead to 6-0. The flood gates opened in the fourth as the Cougars put six runs on the board to put the game out of reach. Keohohou got the scoring started with a two-run triple and scored on a RBI-single from Cadiente. Ellis finished the scoring, belting a three-run home run to put BYU up 12-0. Maryon DeWitt-Wallentine (11-12) pitched four innings, giving up two hits while striking out four.
In both games, Cadiente went 4-for-6 with five RBI, Keohohou went 3-for-5 with four RBI and Ellis went 2-for-4 with five RBI to lead the Cougars.
BYU will have the remainder of the weekend off but return to action Wednesday at Utah State. THe doubleheader is set to begin at 1 p.m. The Cougars were scheduled to play in-state rival Utah tomorrow but the game was cancelled to due inclement weather.
