PUERTO VALLARTA, Mex. — BYU softball dropped to 1-2 at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge on Friday afternoon, falling to Maryland, 10-2 in five innings at Nancy Almaraz Field.
The Cougars (1-2, 0-0 WCC) pitched four different players in the game as the Terrapins totaled 13 hits and nine RBI, while also drawing three walks. BYU recorded six hits on the day but also stranded five runners on base.
Player Highlights
- Ailana Agbayani: 1-3, R
- Violet Zavodnik: 1-3, 2 RBI
- Taryn Lennon: 1-2, R
Outside of a few base runners in the first two innings, neither team threatened much until Maryland batted around the order in the bottom of the third inning. The Terrapins tallied five hits in the frame, scoring seven runs to take a commanding early lead.
Looking to answer in the top of the fourth, the Cougars got their first two runners on in a Huntyr Ava walk and Maddie Udall single up the middle. A double play and strikeout would follow, however, keeping BYU scoreless.
Maryland plated two more runs in their half of the fourth, getting four hits to push its lead to 9-0 through four innings.
Taryn Lennon opened the fifth with a single down the left field line and Ailana Agbayani pushed a single through the left side to give the Cougars two runners on with one out. Violet Zavodnik then roped a triple down the right field line, scoring them both to make it 9-2, Terrapins.
Maryland remained on the attack, getting two runners aboard with one out in their half of the fifth inning. Executing two separate double steal plays, the Terps were able to bring around a runner to score and close out the 10-2 run-rule win.
The Cougars will conclude their opening weekend in Mexico with a Saturday afternoon matchup against North Dakota State at 12:30 p.m. CST. The game will be streamed on FloSoftball.
