Senior effort leads BYU to doubleheader sweep over Southern Utah

PROVO, Utah – To cap off the fall home season, BYU softball defeated Southern Utah in a doubleheader 7-0, 4-2 Saturday afternoon at Gail Miller Field.

Senior McKenzie St. Clair was the highlight of the first game, earning four RBI off a grand slam in the bottom of the fourth. Alexa Strid went 3 for 3 in that game with one run and two doubles.

In the second game, senior first baseman Ashley Thompson went 2 for 3 with two RBI and a run to lead the offensive effort.

The pitching staff threw a solid two games today. All five pitchers had at least two innings in the circle. Senior McKenna Bull started the first game for the Cougars. In her five innings, she had 11 strikeouts and no walks, allowing just three hits and no runs. Kerisa Viramontes came in to relieve Bull in the sixth inning, completing the shutout.

Game two saw three pitchers for BYU. Led by junior Arianna Paulson, they combined to throw four strikeouts and three walks, allowing four hits and two runs. Paulson threw three of the four strikeouts.

The Cougars will complete the fall exhibition schedule next weekend in Las Vegas. BYU will face off against UNLV in a doubleheader on Saturday, Oct. 22, staring at 11 a.m. PDT, at Eller Media Stadium.
