Almond earns second consecutive weekly honor

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Senior RHP Tori Almond has been named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week for the second consecutive week.

Almond needed IV fluids on Thursday, but came back to lead the Cougars to two crucial victories over Saint Mary’s. On Friday, Almond went 4.1 innings, allowed only five hits and struck out three batters to seal the inaugural WCC Championship. She followed up with a complete-game shutout on Senior Day striking out seven and allowing only three hits. With the game scoreless heading into the fourth, Almond struck out five of the next six Gaels to allow BYU to get on the board and finish the sweep.

With the honor, Almond becomes just the second pitcher to earn back-to-back weekly honors this season and the first since Loyola Marymount’s Sydney Gouveia won three straight. This is Almond’s seventh such honor of her career and the ninth weekly conference honor for the Cougars this season.

BYU heads to Seattle to begin NCAA Regional play against Northwestern on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. PST.
