Shubert advances in ITA All-American
TULSA -- BYU’s Thomas Shubert seized his first victory of the D’Novo/ITA Men’s Tennis All-American Tournament, defeating No. 11 seed George Coupland of Mississippi State Monday.
Shubert narrowly won the first set 6-4 and dropped the second set to Coupland 2-6. Charging forward in the final set, Shubert took the match with a 6-2 win.
Shubert will play Maros Horney of Maryland in the second singles qualifying round Tuesday.
Cougar Evan Urbina also played in the first qualifying round, but fell to Duke’s Fred Saba after winning the first set of the match (5-7, 6-1, 6-4).
Urbina faces Drake Bernstein in Tuesday’s qualifying consolation first round.
Patrick Kawka and Shubert will play Duke’s Chris Mengel and Saba Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. in the first round of doubles play. Spencer Smith and Urbina will play Ilija Martinoski and Eric West of Oklahoma State in doubles Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
