Shubert and Urbina advance to all-Cougar final in classic

PROVO -- Thomas Shubert and Evan Urbina marched through the quarter and semifinals of the men’s Utah Fall Tennis Classic Friday and will face off Saturday morning for the singles title.

This is the second year two BYU athletes have competed in the singles final and will be the fourth year in a row that a Cougar has won the singles title.

After winning in the quarterfinals by default due to an emergency withdrawal, Shubert defeated Boise State’s Michael Gilliland (6-2, 6-1).

Urbina went head-to-head with teammate Patrick Kawka in the semifinals, winning the match (6-4, 6-4) and advancing to the final.

In doubles action, Kawka and fellow BYU freshman Tyler Loong were neck-and-neck in their semifinal match, with opponents Keaton Cullimore and John Pearce pulling ahead at the end to grab an 8-6 victory. Cullimore and Pearce went on to claim the doubles title.

The BYU men’s tennis team put up five total victories Friday.

The singles final will be held Saturday at 9 a.m. at the BYU Outdoor Tennis Courts, located south of the soccer field. Admission is free and the event is open to the public.

Spectators may park in the “Y Lot” parking lot, which is open all day Saturday.

This event is sanctioned by the United States Tennis Association. The collegiate athletes do not represent their schools in this tournament, but participate as individuals.
