Eight Cougar Netters Named to Academic All-MWC Team

PROVO -- Eight Cougar tennis players were announced as members of the Mountain West Conference Academic All-Conference team for spring 2010, honoring the athletes’ dedication to success on and off the court.

Daniel Hwang , Cassidy Mears and Spencer Smith were chosen from the men’s tennis team and Elle Carney, Elizaveta Ezhova, McCall Jones , Aubrey Paul and Megan Price were named from the women’s team.

In addition to the Academic All-Conference team, Mears was named to the All-MWC doubles team.

Jones also received the MWC Player of the Year award and was named to the All-MWC singles and doubles teams for the second year in a row. Price was also named to the All-MWC doubles team for the second time.

“I’m really proud of all the girls for being able to succeed in tennis and also in academics,” said women’s coach Lauren Spencer. “They work so hard both on and off the court.”

The tennis players are among 149 BYU athletes chosen for the award. BYU had the most athletes named to the Academic All-Conference team of all schools in the conference.

Student athletes are eligible for selection for the team by maintaining a 3.0 or higher GPA and starting or making significant contributions to their team. The athletes must also have completed at least one term of school at their university.
