Sargeant secures spot in title match of Utah Intercollegiates

SALT LAKE CITY--The BYU men's tennis team continued play as junior Francis Sargeant advanced to the singles final of the Utah Intercollegiates Friday.

 

In the red draw, Sargeant clinched a spot to compete for the title by beating Utah's Ben Tasevac in the semifinals, 7-6, 6-3. The win sets up a showdown between the top two seeds of the tournament with Sargeant and Utah's Slim Hamza.  

 

Sophomore Andrey Goryachkov fell to Hamza in the other semifinal match, 7-6(8), 6-2, while freshman Jacob Sullivan fell in the consolation bracket to Oliver Good of Weber State, 6-3, 6-4.

 

Both BYU players in the white draw lost to their opponents. Nikki Rae fell to Utah State's Curran Wearmouth, 7-6, 6-2. Freshman Jeremy Bourgeois lost to Andrew Whiting also of Utah State. Bourgeois took the first set, but could not keep the momentum, falling 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.

 

In the black draw, freshman Juan Canales was defeated by Utah's Devin Lane, 6-4, 3-1(ret.). In consolation, Sterling Galli also lost to Matt Pearce who is playing unattached, 6-4, 6-3.

 

In doubles action, Sargeant continued to roll in the tournament as he teamed up with Goryachkov to beat the Utah team of Lee and Willems, 8-7, and the team of BYU's Galli and Sullivan, 8-7.

 

Rae and Canales split their two matches. The BYU duo beat the Utah team of Tesevac and Alejandro Medinilla, 8-7, then lost to the Utah State team of Dylan Harlow and Wearmouth, 8-5. The Pearce and Bourgeois team had a solid win over Harlow and Wearmouth, 8-3.

 

Doubles action on Saturday features the matchup of BYU's Sargeant and Goryachkov against Utah's Hamza and Lane, who have both won three matches. Competition continues tomorrow with doubles at 9 a.m. followed by singles at 10 a.m.
