Day One Complete at Toshiba Classic

LONG BEACH -- Against a field of top teams in the country, the BYU swim team placed high for day one of competition at the Toshiba Classic Thursday.

The 200 free relay team of Christian Keil, Daniel Bates, John Kendrick and David Mason started off the meet placing fifth in the event with a time of 1:24.74. The women next placed third in the same event with a time of 1:33.72 with Kirsty Ferrell, Natasha Menezes, Sara Jayne Christiansen Baldwin and Aleesha Miller making up the team.

Kendrick placed the highest for the Cougars in the 500 free in 14th place with a time of 4:35.17 while N. Menezes placed 12th with a time of 4:53.52 on the women’s side.

Vytenis Slenys placed 10th in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:52.24 while Rachel Grant placed eighth in the women’s event with a time of 2:02.32.

Mason placed highest for the Cougars in the 50 free in 22nd with a time of 21.40 with Keil right behind him in 24th with a time of 21.51. On the women’s side, Miller placed 17th in the 50 free with a time of 23.69.

The men’s 400-medley relay team of Keil, Mason, Slenys and Kendrick placed seventh with a time of 3:28.50 to finish up day one for the men.

The women ended day one with a sixth-place finish in the 400-medley relay with Candice Smith leading off in the backstroke, Baldwin in the breaststroke, Grant in the fly and Miller anchoring in the free. They earned a time of 3:47.97.

The Cougars will continue the Toshiba Classic Friday and Saturday. Check back to www.byucougars.com for results.
