PROVO -- Five BYU divers travel to Austin, Texas Thursday to start the Zone E diving competition to decide who will make it to the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.

“It’s going to be a great opportunity to see how we can perform in the national light,” said BYU diving coach Keith Russell. “Our zone is loaded with the very best divers in the country and it will be a tough meet.”

Ava Jackman, Tawni Jones, Emily Woods, Ron Morris and Sam Hatch will all be competing for BYU at the zone championships. Each posted high enough scores during the season to be granted passage to the meet.

Russell said that Jackman is currently undergoing medical treatment and is wondering whether she will be able to compete. Jackman and Morris are both coming off of winning the 1-meter competitions at the Mountain West Conference Championships and also being named Divers of the Year.

At the MWCC Morris placed third on the platform and fourth on the 3-meter board. Hatch placed sixth on the 3-meter and would’ve placed fifth in both the platform and 1-meter competitions had he made the finals.

Jackman not only finished first on the 1-meter board, but she finished second on the platform and fifth on the 3-meter board. Jones placed third on the platform and 1-meter and placed fourth on the 3-meter board at the MWCC.

Woods secured a Zone Diving spot when she tallied a season-high on the 1-meter board at the Wildcat Invitational (University of Arizona) when she finished fourth out of 40 divers.

The Zone E Diving Championships will start at noon on March 12 and go through the 14th. It will be held in Austin, Texas at the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center. Check back to www.byucougars.com/swimming_diving/ for scores and updates.
