FEDERAL WAY -- BYU's Jorge Azevedo swam in the 100-yard butterfly on Friday at the NCAA Championships. Azevedo finished with a time of 47.99 to finish in 34th place in the preliminary round.

This 100 fly time by Azevedo was his second best only to a 47.11 posting he recorded a few weeks previous at the NCAA "Last Chance" Meet. He did not qualify for the finals at the NCAA Championships.

"I am real proud of Jorge (Azevedo)," BYU men's swim coach Tim Powers said. "He was not able to swim his best time this weekend, but he showed a lot of determination to even get this far. Jorge has had a great collegiate career."

Azevedo is a two-time All-MWC performer. He also was named Second Team All-American during last season as he swam on the BYU 200 freestyle relay that place 15th in the country.

In the last regular-season meet of the 2007-08 season, Azevedo set a new Richards Building Pool record in the 100 fly as the Cougars swam against Utah with a time of 48.11.
