Men seal the victory with a win in the final event
BYU was able to slip by the University of Hawaii in a meet that went back and forth until the very last event. The Cougars began the meet strong, finishing one-two in the 200 medley relay and then by finishing first and third in the final relay of the day, squeaked by the Rainbow Warriors by one point, 150-149.
"This meet was just like a heavy weight fight," said men's swimming head coach Tim Powers. "We got out to fast start, but it was neck and neck throughout."
The Cougars split first place finishes with Hawaii over the 12-event meet. BYU captured wins in both relays while Mark Chay, Kenny Carpenter and Brett Allen picked up individual victories.
Carpenter was able to claim first place in the 100 fly with a time of 49.69, while Allen was able to pick up his second straight victory in the 50 free touching the wall at 20.75.
Chay's victory in the 200 IM, at a time of 1:50.91, was the event that put the Cougars in position to capture the one point win in the last relay of the meet. The native of Singapore also swam his way to a first place finish in the 100 free with a time of 45.36.
"This was really a great meet," Powers said. "You could really feel the energy and enthusiasm in the pool."
Following an afternoon on the beach of Waikiki, the men will travel home and prepare for a dual meet with the women against Mountain West Conference foes Air Force and Wyoming on Friday and Saturday. With the win the men stay undefeated on the season heading back into Mountain West competition.
