BYU misses first place only twice

The men's swimming team started off the dual meet with Washington with a one-two finish in the 200-yard medley relay and never looked back. The Cougars claimed the top time in all but two events versus the Huskies on Saturday in a meet that ended in a rout 161-101.

The competition was the first for the Cougars in over three weeks and head Coach Tim Powers worried about his team not being in peak performance, but was pleasantly surprised by the outcome.

"I was expecting a little bit of rust from the guys after the break," Powers said, "But the guys really had a great swim."

BYU gained three new team members going into the final stretch of the season including Brett Allen, a transfer from Auburn who sat out the first semester with a knee injury; Saul Stephens, who recently returned home from a mission; and Jorge Azevedo who joins the team after swimming in Brazil.

"These three guys give our roster a lot more depth and more ways to play with the lineup," Powers said.

In his first competition on the season, Allen picked up a first place finish in the 50 free with a time of 20.73 and a second place finish in the 100 free at 46.13.

Cougar stalwarts Kenny Carpenter and Mark Chay continued their impressive seasons with eight first place finishes between the two. Both Carpenter and Chay swam on the 200-yard medley relay that placed first with a time of 1:32.00. Carpenter also swam the leadoff leg of the first place 400-yard free relay team that finished with a time of 3:04.85. Chay finished first in the 100 back, 100 free and 200 IM with times of 49.99, 45.70 and 1:52.76. Carpenter picked up his individual wins in the 200 free and 100 fly touching the wall at 1:41.80 and 50.06.

The Cougars also had individual wins from Adam Ware in the 100 breast with a time of 57.57 just ahead of teammate Nick Tobler who finished second at 57.91. Ware also picked up a first place finish in the 200 breast finishing with a final time of 2:05.12.

Jeffrey Su continued his successful freshman campaign picking up wins in the 200 fly and 500 free with times of 1:53.54 and 4:46.15.

The divers were also a part of the competition, but because Washington did not field a diving team the scores were all exhibition. New diver Ron Morris picked up his first win of the season on the 1-meter after officially joining the team. And senior Scott Randall picked up the first place finish in the 3-meter with a score of 94.75.

The men will now break for another two weeks and then travel to Honolulu with a meet with Hawaii on January 22.
