Huskies Too Much as Cougars Fall
Seattle, WASH. (January 11, 2002) - Coming off a long Christmas training break, the rust set in as both the men's and women's team lost at University of Washington, Friday night. The men's team 19 dual meet consecutive win streak was snapped as they lost valuable diving points with the divers competing at the Arizona Invite.
The men won five of 11 events, but the Huskies squeaked by with a 108.5-96.5 victory to drop the men to 3-1 on the season. The women's team won three of 11 but lost 123-77 to drop them to 3-2 for the season before they travel to face Oregon State tomorrow at 4 p.m.
The men lost the first two events before winning the next three with Gary Tan's victory in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:40.94. Billy Betz posted a time of 20.83 in a 50 free win. Randy Belliston won the 400 IM, posting a season-high time of 4:02.72.
Junior Jeff Mason won the 100 free with a time of 46.41, just ahead of teammate Michael Mullen. The 200-free relay squad of Mullen, Betz, John Malfatt, and James Bekker edged the Husky team by a tenth of a second with a time of 1:24.06
The men's team completed their fourth competition in less than a week after spending Christmas training in Hawaii. They competed in the Duke Kahanamoku Sprint and Distance meets and a dual-meet victory over Iowa on Tuesday before heading straight to Seattle from Honolulu.
"It was a great competitive meet," said men's head swim coach Tim Powers. "We swam well, but I think we suffered from a little jet lag."
For the women, All-American Cortnee Adams won the 50 free once again with a time of 24.06. Junior Amanda Grant won the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:06.38. The 200-free relay squad of Heidi Leitz, Nichole Burrows, Ashlee Rumfallow, and Adams won decisively posting a time of 1:37.26.
"It was another tough meet," said women's head swim coach Stan Crump. "They were stronger after the Christmas training break. I look forward to our meet at Oregon State tomorrow after seeing them in the Speedo Cup last month."
