Men's 200 free relay team sets new meet and school record on day 2
LOS ANGELES - The men's 200 free relay team consisting of Jordan Fletcher, Payton Sorenson, Garret Beaman and Brent Murray set an MPSF meet record and a school record with their time of 1:18.30, an 'A-cut time, on day two of the MPSF Championships in Los Angeles.
The women's team of Alexandria Sorensen, Taryn Toolson Lewis, Kimberly Welch Doroghian and Andrea Grant finished in second place on the women's side with a time of 1:31.97.
The women jumped up to third place with 216 points after a strong day of swimming and trail leader Hawai'i who has 240 points. The men's team jumped up to second place with 228 points and trail leader Wyoming by just two points.
"It was exciting to see the guys break a school and meet record today," head coach John Brooks said. "Our women's team performed well today and have put themselves in position to make a run at the title over the next two days. On the guys' side, we made up a lot of ground after yesterday and I was proud of the way our guys and girls swam today."
Alexandra Dodds finished in sixth place in the 500 free with a time of 4:55.06 and Alia Welsh won the consolation final with a time of 4:54.56. On the men's side, Shawn Western finished in eighth place with a time of 4:30.17. Stott Bushnell finished fifth in the consolation finals with a time of 4:27.99 and Samuel Bates finished in eighth with a time of 4:35.04.
Hayden Palmer recorded a fourth-place finish in the 200 IM with a time of 1:46.91 and Andrew Rutherfurd finished in eighth with a time of 1:49.68. Preston Jenkins finished second in the consolation finals with a time of 1:48.67. Londyn Clawson finished in fourth place in the finals for the women with a time of 2:02.25.
Murray qualified first for the men's 50 free, setting the meet record with a time of 19.99. He finished in second place with a time of 20.00 only to watch Dillon Virva of UNLV set the new meet record with a time of 19.92. The Cougars finished in third, fourth and fifth in the event to bring in a total of 62 points for the event. Sorenson finished third with a time of 20.01, Beaman finished fourth with a time of 20.03 and Fletcher finished fifth with a time of 20.21. Sorensen finished in fourth place on the women's side with a time of 23.28 and Doroghian finished in seventh with a time of 23.56. Grant won the consolation finals with a time of 23.46 and Lewis finished in eighth with a time of 23.75.
"We have a lot of great swimmers swimming the events that they excell in tomorrow," Brooks said. "If we swim the way we know how to swim, we will put ourselves in the position we need to be going into the last day of the meet."
Premilinary events start tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. PST with the 400 IM. Live results are available as well as a live video web stream of day three. Check the men's schedule page for final results and standings after day three.
DIVING
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Nicholas Suder won the men's 1-meter and Raleigh Williams Taylor fininished in second in the women's 3-meter at the MPSF Diving Championships in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Nicholas Suder won the men's 1-meter with a score of 356.95 with Matt Hopper finishing in sixth place with a score of 301.00 to join Suder in the top eight. David Corless finished first in the consolation finals and ninth overall with a score of 313.85 and Trayton Speth finished right behind him in second in the consolation finals and 10th overall with a score of 310.45.
Raleigh Williams Taylor and Dayna Christensen finished second and third, respectively, in the finals of the women's 3-meter. Taylor finished with a score of 286.65 and Christensen finished with a score of 281.15. Mackenzie Rands won the consolation finals with a score of 242.90 and Haley Francois finished third with a score of 235.70.
Tomorrow the diving championships will begin at 11 a.m. PST with the men's 3-m prelims. The finals will begin at 12:15 p.m. and the consolation finals will begin at 1:10 p.m. The women's 1-m prelims will begin at 3:25 p.m. with the finals at 4:30 p.m. and the consolation finals at 5:15 p.m.
