PROVO -- Former BYU All-American golfer Daniel Summerhays earned his PGA Tour card after finishing fifth on the money list following a successful summer on the Nationwide Tour.

Summerhays joins Cougar greats Mike Weir, Dean Wilson and Andy Miller as the fourth Cougar to earn his tour card since the early 1990’s and will get his first taste of PGA Tour competition on Jan. 10, 2011 at the Sony Open in Hawaii.

Summerhays capped an illustrious collegiate career at BYU by claiming first place finish at the Children’s Hospital Invitational and becoming the first amateur to win a Nationwide Tour event. Summerhays subsequently joined the Nationwide Tour and in his first full year on the tour, made 16 cuts and finished 35th on the money list, just 10 spots out of receiving his PGA Tour card. He competed on the Nationwide Tour from 2007-2010.

As a junior at BYU, Summerhays was one of 10 golfers named to the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) All-America First Team, being the first Cougar golfer to do so since 1986. He was also selected to the C0SIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Second Team and was named an All-America Scholar by the GCAA. His 69.95 stroke average that season led the nation and was the only mark below a 70 average, the 7th best mark in NCAA history. He also tied an NCAA record-low round of 60.

Summerhays garnered GCAA All-America Honorable Mention honors as a sophomore and finished 39th at the NCAA Championships. He was also named Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year and received first-team All-MWC and Academic All-MWC in his first year at BYU.

Summerhays was named to the MWC 10th Anniversary Men’s Golf Team in February 2009.
