BYU Places Second at PING Cougar Classic
PROVO -- The BYU men’s golf team came within two strokes of defending its PING Cougar Classic title as the Cougars placed second behind Colorado State. BYU (293-279-280—852) went -12 in the tournament led by senior Robbie Fillmore at -7.
“It was a great day out here,” said BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank. “We came within a couple strokes of winning the tournament, but Colorado State is a really good team. I’m very proud of our guys. We’re looking forward to the Mountain West Conference Championships.”
The Cougars carded an 8-under 280 in Saturday’s third round, one stroke better than the Rams, but could not overcome the three-stroke deficit they had to begin the day. No. 11 UNLV finished third at -6 while Nevada finished fourth at -5 and No. 8 Augusta State placed fifth in the 18-team field at -4.
Fillmore tied for fourth place in the final standings after going even par in the third round. Playing in his final regular-season tournament, Fillmore carded four birdies over the last 18 holes, giving him 15 for the event.
Two other Cougars finished in the top 15 as sophomore Jordan Rodgers and freshman Zac Blair tied for 13th place at -1. Rodgers had the best BYU round of the day at 3-under-par with four birdies. Blair posted a 1-under score of 71.
Senior Brady Johnson and junior Esteban Calisto each went 2-under-par in round three. Johnson finished the tournament tied for 24th at +1 while Calisto tied for 43rd at +5.
BYU will next compete at the MWC Championships May 6-8 in Tucson, Ariz.
