TEMPE -- Freshman Zac Blair led the way for the BYU men’s golf team Friday through the first two rounds of the ASU Thunderbird Invitational, finishing the day tied for 18th place overall at 1-under-par. The Cougars are currently in 15th place (+15) in a field featuring 11 ranked teams, including five in the top 10.

“We weren’t quite as good as we wanted to be,” said BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank. “It’s a challenging golf course, really firm and fast. We came down here hoping to be in contention in a very tough field and just haven’t handled the challenge very well.”

Blair posted six birdies in round one to go -2 over the first 18 holes. His round featured a string of four straight birdies that got him to 4-under-par through his first six holes. Blair went +1 in round two with two birdies to pace the Cougars.

Senior leader Robbie Fillmore rebounded from a round-one score of five-over-par to go -2 in round two and +3 overall on the day. He began the second round with a birdie on the 10th hole and then caught fire, birdying holes 2, 5, 6 and 7.

Sophomore Jordan Rodgers was +6 on the day after going 3-over-par in each round. Senior Brady Johnson was right behind at +7 while junior Esteban Calisto was +17.

The tournament will conclude on Saturday.
