FRESNO -- The BYU men’s golf team got off to a great start Monday at the Fresno State Lexus Golf Classic, sitting in fourth place with almost two rounds in the books. The Cougars were +11 on the day before second-round action was suspended due to darkness.

“We played really well in the first round and then had a few hiccups towards the end, but we’re in good shape overall,” said BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank. “Conditions were tough, but we hung in there pretty well. We just need to come out tomorrow, be a little more consistent and put together a solid round.”

Just one shot out of third place, the Cougars went +6 through the first 18 holes and were +5 in the second round when play was stopped. BYU’s golfers will return Tuesday morning to complete their final holes before finishing the tournament with third-round action.

The Cougars’ two seniors led the way for BYU as Brady Johnson and Robbie Fillmore finished the day tied for third and sixth places, respectively, in the field. Johnson was two strokes under par overall in the tournament when play was stopped after going -1 in the first round and -1 through 16 holes of the second round. Johnson was +3 in the first round of the par-71 course but stormed back in round two with six birdies in 14 holes to go 4-under.

Freshman Alton Anderson posted the top Cougar score of round one at -3 with five birdies before going +7 through 14 holes of the second round to go +4 on the day. Junior Esteban Calisto was just one shot over par through 16 second-round holes after going +4 in round one, giving him an overall score of +5.

With five scores counting for BYU in the Classic format, sophomore Jordan Rodgers also contributed to the Cougar total with a score of 8-over through 35 holes on the day. Freshman Zac Blair was right behind at +9 through 14 round-two holes.
