Cougars in Contention After Round Two

WAHIAWA -- The BYU men’s golf team stayed in the hunt at the John Burns Invitational Thursday, recording a second-round score of 277, 11-under-par. The mark puts the Cougars in fourth place heading into the final round of action.

At 13-under-par for the tournament so far, BYU is just one shot back of UNLV, three strokes behind Texas A&M and five shots short of California. The Cougars’ round-two 277 was tied for the second-best score of the day.

While BYU freshman Zac Blair posted the low score for the Cougars in round one, it was a pair of seniors who came up big for BYU in round two. Robbie Fillmore went 4-under-par with a score of 68 to move into a tie for ninth place overall in the tournament. Fellow senior Brady Johnson was right behind with a 69 and is now tied for 16th in the field of 83 golfers.

All four Cougar scores that counted toward the team total were under par on the day, helping BYU jump up two spots from Wednesday. Junior Esteban Calisto and freshman Alton Anderson each went 2-under-par with scores of 70 with Calisto moving into a tie for 16th place. Blair was even at 72 and is tied for 13th. BYU currently boasts four golfers in the top 16 for the event.

Action will conclude on Friday.
