REDMOND -- BYU senior Brady Johnson recently competed at the U.S. Amateur Qualifier and took home first-place medalist honors after 36 holes at Juniper Golf Course.

The Mill Bay, British Columbia native shot a 7-under 137 (69-68—137) to qualify for the U.S. Amateur Championship, which will be held Aug. 24-30 at the Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla. Johnson was one of five golfers from the qualifier to advance to the championship.

Leading the team with a 72.78 stroke average during his junior campaign, Johnson enjoyed a season-best second-place finish at the PING Cougar Classic after shooting 10-under-par. The highlight of the year came after qualifying for the NCAA West Regional and eventually turning in a fifth-place performance at 8-under-par and shooting a career-low round of 67 in the opening round. He later competed at the NCAA Championships where he shot 13-over-par at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.

The U.S. Amateur Championship, the oldest USGA championship, was first played in 1895 at Newport Golf Club in Rhode Island. The event, which has no age restriction, is open to those with a Handicap Index of 2.4 or lower. The winner of the U.S. Amateur earns exemptions into both the Master’s and U.S. Open.
