Men's golf finishes 9th at Morris Williams Intercollegiate

AUSTIN -- The BYU men's golf team battled against tough competition at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate to achieve a solid ninth-place finish, ahead of No. 37 Pepperdine and No. 47 TCU. Sophomore Robbie Fillmore led the Cougars in round three, shooting a 2-over-par 73, which helped him finish tied for fourth place.

"We played two solid rounds on a very challenging golf course," said BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank. "I was excited to see Robbie finish in fourth place and Esteban in 21st."

The third round proved to be one of the Cougar's strongest at the tournament. With Fillmore shooting consistently throughout the round, and freshman Esteban Calisto hitting an even-par-71, including two birdies on the front nine and one on the back, BYU achieved a solid final score. Sophomore Brady Johnson hit a 2-over-par 74 in round three to boost the Cougar score.

"I thought we had a good finish for such a challenging golf course and tough field," Calisto said.

The Morris Williams Intercollegiate featured 15 of the nation's top teams, including No. 1 Alabama, No. 5 Oklahoma State, and No. 14 Auburn. The overall winner was Bobby Hudson of No. 49 Texas, who shot 73-70-65-208. Texas won the tournament at 16-over-par, followed by Oklahoma State in second place and No. 20 UNLV in third place.

The Cougars will next be in action April 18 and 19 at the Ping Cougar Classic, held at Riverside Golf Course in Provo.

"We've been practicing well at Riverside," Brockbank said. "If we can make our putts, we have a real chance at winning the Cougar Classic."
