Cougars Finish Second at William H. Tucker Intercollegiate
ALBUQUERQUE -- The No. 12 BYU men's golf team finished in second place at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate Tournament Saturday. The impressive finish was a great start for the first tournament of the 2006-2007 season.
BYU junior Daniel Summerhays led the Cougars to their second-place finish. Facing 40 mph winds, Summerhays managed to hit a 69 on the par-72 course. Summerhays ended the tournament in fifth place with a final score of two-under-par.
Seniors Nick Becker and Jake Ellison also placed in the top 20 of the tournament. Becker landed a ninth-place finish while Ellison finished the tournament in 14th.
"We led as a team for 52 holes," said head coach Bruce Brockbank. "The tournament showed that we can play really well but that we still have areas we need to improve upon. It left a discouraging taste in our mouths when we finished in second place instead of first."
Twenty-one schools competed at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate on the Course of Champions in Albuquerque, N.M. The University of New Mexico won the tournament with a total of 874 points (+10). BYU was close behind with 875 (+11).
The Cougars will compete again on September 30 at the PING Preview in Richmond, Virginia.
