BYU men's golf team in third place after day one at Husky Invitational
SEATTLE -- After a solid first-place finish in round one, the No. 17 BYU men's golf team fell to third place in the second round Monday at the Opus Northwest Husky Invitational.
The Cougars are competing on the par 72 Gold Mountain Olympic Course against a field including California, Fresno State, Oregon State, San Diego State, Washington State, Tohoku Fukushi (Japan) and UCLA.
"This is a long and tricky course, but our guys have handled things pretty well," head coach Bruce Brockbank said. "We've done better than a lot of the teams out there, but we were a little sloppy on the second 18."
During the second round of play, BYU fell to a third-place finish behind host Washington (365-366--731) and Oregon State (373-367--740).
BYU leads both No. 3-ranked UCLA and No. 4 California by three strokes after the first day of play.
Junior Todd Miller is tied for seventh place and leads the Cougars with the low score of one-over-par (73-72--145). Sophomore Oscar Alvarez, who had a fantastic first round score of 69, fell from first place in round one to 13th in round two (69-78--147).
Other Cougar scores include junior Greg Machtaler who is tied for 18th (73-75--148), freshman Clay Ogden in 29th (74-77--151), freshman Jake Ellison tied for 34th (75-78--153) and junior Ron Harvey Jr. tied for 42nd (76-78--154).
After the first round, BYU was at the top of the team standing (364-380--744) led by Alvarez who tied for first place with California's Scott Carlyle at three-under-par.
"We shot 364 on a tough course to lead after the first round," Brockbank said. "We really did a good job of playing solid right from the start."
The Husky Invitational is one of the few tournaments all season where six Cougars will compete for five scores. Typically, it is five individuals per team and the top four scores counting towards the team score.
Washington's three-time All-American Brock Mackenzie leads the individual standings at four-under-par (70-70--140).
BYU will resume play in the final round Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. and hopes to improve on its third-place finish after day one.
"I think we should be in a good position to challenge for the title going into the final day," Brockbank said.
