Men's Golf Team Finishes Strong at Red River Classic

Dallas, Texas (10/12/99) Sophomore Todd Miller shot a 64 to help BYU vault into sixth place at the Taylor Made Red River Classic at the Dallas Athletic Club in Dallas, Texas. BYU was in ninth place after two rounds before shooting 279 in the final round to finish at 22-under-par.

The improved third-round effort by the Cougars wasn't enough to catch fifth-ranked Oklahoma State who posted a sizzling 51-under-par to lead the field.

"There were some teams making some serious puts and we never seemed to get going," BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said. "We found out in this tournament that there is a lot of great teams this year. We threw away a lot of great shots and made some mental mistakes that really hurt us."

Seventh-ranked BYU was led by Sophomore Todd Miller whose incredible third round score of 64 help him finish tied for 11th individually at 10-under-par.

"The highlight of this tournament was Todd Miller shooting a 64 on the final round," Brockbank said. "That's as low of a score that I've seen since I've been here. He's been waiting to show us what he can do for a long time. This was his first tournament this year. His amazing round couldn't have come at a better time for us. We needed that kind of effort out of him."

Senior Andy Miller (-5) and Junior Billy Harvey (-4) also shot impressive rounds for the Cougars.

Individual medalist honors went to John Bloomfield of South Carolina who recorded a tournament-record 197 (-19). He edged Martin Maritz of Tulsa by two stokes after Maritz broke the tournament and Dallas Athletic Club course record with a 62.
