BYU Men's Golf Struggles Through Final Round of Southwestern
Westlake Village, Calif. - The BYU men's golf team finished out a poor performance at the Cleveland Golf Classic held at North Ranch County Club finishing 14 out of 15 teams competing. Coach Bruce Brockbank commented on the mediocre play.
"It was good to play this tournament," Brockbank said, "because it showed us how average we really are as a team right now."
BYU's top finisher was Billy Harvey at 8 over for the tournament and tied for 27th place. The team shot 301 for the second round, but carried a prospective 294 into the last few holes before falling off of the pace with several bogies and double bogies.
"It looked like we might finish a little better," Brockbank said, "but then the last few holes come along we just fell apart mentally. I am not pleased with the way we are handling some situations right now."
"We will evaluate where are and get better from there," Brockbank said, "because that is basically the only way to go from here."
The No. 18 Arizona State Sun Devils placed three of its golfers in the top 10 on its way to winning the team title for the second year in a row at the 24th annual Cleveland Golf Classic. TCU, Oregon State, and Washington round out the top 4, with three teams tying for fifth place.
Weather was the determining factor in the tournament. Rain and wind allowed for only difficult round on Monday, as just three teams shot under 300 and only golfers hot par or lower. Tuesday's round featured sunnier skies, no rain and yielded generally lower scores for the teams involved, with nine teams shooting under 300 and 10 golfers at par or lower.
The Cougars will have the next three weeks to prepare for the Morris Williams Invitational in Austin, Texas on March 26-27.
