Miller finishes third at Thunderbird/Savanne Inv.

Tempe, Ariz.-Senior Scott Miller finished eight-under par 208 to finish third overall and helped BYU finish seventh at nine-under-par in the Thunderbird/Savanne Invitational on Saturday.

Miller shot a final round 68 to jump from nineth to third place for his third top ten finish this season. Miller is currently ranked 64th individually by the MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings. He is the second highest ranked Cougar behind Manuel Merizalde, who is ranked 51st. Miller finished one stroke ahead of U.S. Amateur champion Jeff Quinney of Arizona State.

He had an outstanding performance," BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said. "Scott (Miller) was a real highlight for us in this tournament."

Other highlights include the consistent play of Merizalde 67-73-73-213 who finished 24th overall. Junior Kyle Wight playing in his first tournament for BYU since October had solid first and third rounds going 70 and 71 respectively. After shooting two birdies, one bogie and 15 pars on the final day, Wight finished in 76th place.

Host Arizona State claimed its third consecutive title outplaying No. 4 Texas in the final round to win by six strokes. Individually Anders Hultman finished two shots in front of Miller to claim the individual title. The Cougars, who led after the first round, struggled in the Arizona heat after weeks of cold weather in Provo. All-American Merizalde suffered a mild heat stroke on the final day of competition.

"We still have got plenty of work in front of us to get to where we want to be," Brockbank said. "For the most part this was a pretty positive week for our team."

BYU looks to build off this respectable performance as it heads into the Taylor Made/Addidas Cougar Classic on April 20-21st.
