MORGAN HILL, Calif. — BYU men’s golf moved into fifth after shooting an 8-over-par 296 in round two of the NCAA Morgan Hill Regional at The Institute Golf Club on Tuesday.

“I’m very pleased with how the guys fought today and handled adversity, especially considering the slow start we had,” said BYU director of golf Todd Miller. “Our guys stayed composed, even when the course was playing the toughest we’ve seen all week.”

On a difficult day for scoring, where no team and only five individuals finished under par, No. 18 Mississippi State leads the Morgan Hill regional after 36 holes at 2 under par with No. 7 Florida State in second at 1 over.

No. 31 Baylor carded the round of the day with a 6 over par second round to finish at 3 over and move into third with No. 6 Pepperdine in fourth at 6 over as a team. With an 8 over par round on Tuesday, BYU moved inside the qualifying number into solo fifth with 18 holes to play.

Zac Jones (69-73—142) continued his strong play with a 1-over-par 73 to move into the top 5 with just 18 holes to play. The WCC individual champion carded two birdies on the day with only three bogies on his scorecard.

“Zac has put on a ball striking clinic this week at The Institute,” said Miller. “With the greens getting firm and fast, he had a tough day on the greens with a few three putts, two of them for par. However, the way he hit the ball and his course management has been elite. It has put him in a position to contend tomorrow.”

Carson Lundell (72-75—147) and Max Brenchley (72-75—147) sit at 3 over par and moved into the top 25 after 36-holes. Lundell carded a 3-over 75 while Brenchley carded a 1-under-par 71, one of four players in the field to finish under par on the day.

David Timmins (72-77—149) sits in a tie for 33rd at 5 over after a 77 in round two while Tyson Shelley (75-80—155) rounded out the scoring for BYU at 11 over through 36 holes.

The Cougars will tee off at 8:25 a.m. PDT with Missouri and Grand Canyon off the 10th tee in the final round on Wednesday.
