PROVO, Utah — No. 35 BYU men’s golf sits in 12th after shooting 16-over-par through 36 holes at the R.E.L. Lamkin Invitational at San Diego Country Club.

The Cougars got off to a slow start on Monday as putts constantly burned the edge through the opening 18 holes. After a first-round 298, BYU was tied for 13th at 10-over-par but the hole began to open up as the Cougars rolled in 16 birdies en route to a 6-over second round, moving them two spots up the leaderboard.

“It’s always difficult to follow up a great performance and we definitely struggled with it today,” said BYU director of golf Todd Miller. “San Diego country club requires great control with approach shots with distance, spin, and accuracy. You can hit a lot of solid shots that turn out bad, and then things get even tougher around the greens.”

Max Brenchley, who is playing as an individual competitor, marked the low round for the Cougars on day one as he fired rounds of 71-72—143. The junior from Alpine, Utah carded four birdies and two eagles to shoot 1-under followed by an even-par 72 that included three birdies to sit tied for 20th going into the final round.

Zac Jones is tied for 26th entering the final 18 after shooting 75-70—145 to open the championship. Senior Carson Lundell posted scores of 74-73—147 to sit tied for 40th with David Timmins three shots back at 6-over with back-to-back 75s.

Tyson Shelley shot 74-77—151 over the first two rounds and is tied for 65th while Keanu Akina rounded out the day one scoring for BYU with rounds of 75-81—156.

“The guys are determined to shoot the low score of the tournament tomorrow,” said Miller. “I believe we can do it if we can just get a little momentum on our first few holes and stay patient throughout the round.”

Scoring for Tuesday’s final round will be available at golfstat.com.
