Lundell and Timmins advance to match play at U.S. Amateur Championship

PARAMUS, N.J. — BYU's Carson Lundell and David Timmins each finished in the top 25 of stroke play qualifying to qualify for match play at the 122nd U.S. Amateur Championship on Tuesday.

Of the 64 players that made the match play field, 50 universities will be represented. Of those 50 universities BYU joins Florida, Georgia Tech, Oklahoma State, Pepperdine, Ohio State, Kentucky, Tennessee, Stanford, Illinois and Boise State as the only teams to have multiple players qualify for the match play portion of the championship.

“It’s exciting to see our team have success on one of the biggest stages in amateur golf,” said BYU director of golf Todd Miller. “To my knowledge this is the most BYU golfers we’ve had competing in the U.S. Amateur Championships in one year. These are the types of experiences that simulate the pressure we feel at the National Championship and prepare our team to succeed in the future.”

Lundell turned in rounds of 73-69—142 to finish tied for 14th and earn his second trip to match play in three trips to the U.S. Amateur Championship (2020, 2021, 2022).

“It felt like the complete opposite of yesterday,” said Lundell “I hit my driver extremely well and really struggled with my irons, but my short game has bailed me out the last few days, which is why I’ll be playing tomorrow."

Lundell turned in an even-par 35 on his opening nine and made seven straight pars on the back nine. The senior bogeyed the par-4 8th hole, his 17th of the day, to fall to 3-over par and into a tie for 63rd with one hole to go. After a 355-yard drive, Lundell hit his 199-yard approach to two feet which gave him a tap-in eagle to secure his place in the match play field.

“Making eagle on the 18th was absolutely huge for me,” said Lundell. “I had just come off a bad bogey from center fairway on eight and Todd (Miller) and I thought that a birdie would keep me out of a playoff. My drive leaked a little right, but I hit the best shot of the week from the rough to a super-tough green and pin location to two feet for a tap-in eagle.”

Lundell will be joined in match play by fellow fifth-year senior David Timmins. Timmins carded rounds of 71-72—143 to finish at 2-over par in a tie for 21st and will make his first trip to match play at a USGA event.

“I played some great golf today,” said Timmins. “I got off to a hot start making four birdies in my first 10 holes. Although I hit a rough patch on the back nine, it ended up being enough to make match play which I am really excited about.”

Elijah Turner and Brock Goyen also completed their second round with Turner carding rounds of 78-76—154 and Goyen posting rounds of 73-82—155.

In the round of 64, Lundell will take on UConn's Jared Nelson at 9:20 AM EDT while Timmins will face Chris Francoeur of Louisville at 9:40. Live scoring is available at usga.org.
