HENDERSON, Nev. — BYU men’s golf fired a 3-under-par 285 in the second round of the WCC Championship at Reflection Bay Golf Club on Friday and are tied for second place heading into the final round.

“I’m really proud of how the guys have played so far and especially how they’ve handled the difficult conditions over the first two days,” said BYU director of golf Todd Miller. “We’ve played well enough to put ourselves in contention and it’s exciting to have a chance to win the tournament with a great round tomorrow."

No. 6 Pepperdine (288-285—573) shot 3-under in round two to take a 3-shot lead into the final 18-holes. The Cougars (291-285—576) and San Francisco (292-284—576) are knotted at even-par through 36-holes and chasing the defending national champion Waves.

LMU (288-289—577) sist in fourth, just four shot off the 36-hole lead while San Diego (289-296—585) and Santa Clara (293-292—585) round out the top-5 at 9-over par.

Riley Lewis of LMU leads the individual scoring by two shots after two rounds at 140, but BYU’s Max Brenchley (75-67—142) catapulted his way into contention with a 5-under-par 67 on day two. Brenchley carded four birdies an eagle and a bogey to match the low round of the tournament and put himself in a tie for fifth, three shots off the lead.

“Max played some incredible golf today,” said Miller. “He was so consistent all day long and he put himself in a great spot going into the final round tomorrow.”

First round leader Cole Ponich got off to a bumpy start going 2-over on his opening nine, but made a closing birdie to keep himself in a tie for eighth at 1-under-par for the tournament. Carson Lundell (75-72—147) made five bogeys and five birdies in his second round to post an even-par 72 and move into the top-20 at 3-over.

David Timmins (72-77—149) posted a second-round 77 and sits in a tie for 25th at 5-over par entering day three. Tyson Shelley rebounded with an even par 72 on Friday to move ten spot up the leaderboard into 29th.

The Cougars will tee it up with Pepperdine, the defending national champions, and the San Francisco in the final round Saturday with the first group teeing off at 8:40 a.m. PDT. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com and live updates will be posted on the BYU men’s golf Instagram account.
