PROVO, Utah — BYU men’s golf braved wind, rain and hail to shoot 18-under par on the first day of the 57th PING Cougar Classic at Riverside Country Club, Friday.

David Timmins holds the first-round lead after posting a bogey free 9-under 63 in the opening round. Timmins’ 63 matches the fourth lowest score in program history and ties Andy Miller (April 2000) for the lowest round ever at the Cougar Classic.

Carson Lundell is tied for sixth with an opening round 65. Tyson Shelley shot 73 (T22), Cole Ponich opened with a 69 (T30), while Keanu Akina carded a 74 (T44) to round out the BYU team scoring.

Three other Cougars—Max Brenchley, Brock Goyen and Zach Jones—who are competing as individuals shot 69, 69 and 71 respectively.

The Cougars shot an 18-under 270 in the first round, good for a three shot lead over San Diego who finished at 273. Boise State (278), Colorado State (281) and Pacific (282) rounded out the top five.

After two lightning delays with two holes left in round one, the weather finally broke allowing the teams to complete round one. The 13 teams in the field then started second round of 18 and were able to finish between 11 and 14 holes before play was suspended due to darkness at 8:10 p.m. MDT.

Second round play will resume with a 9 a.m. MDT with a shotgun start. Following completion of the second round, the field will move directly into the final round of the 54-hole tournament.

Live scoring will be available at golfstat.com.
