Cougars move into third place at John A. Burns Intercollegiate
PROVO, Utah — BYU men’s golf jumped up the leaderboard four spots into third place, following an 8-under-par 280 in the second round at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate on Friday.
Carson Lundell (71-68—139) and Tyson Shelley (73-68—141) fired matching 68s in the second round to lead the Cougars. Lundell’s 4-under par round moved him to 5-under for the tournament and into 11th place.
“It was awesome to watch Carson birdie every par 3 on the course in windy conditions today,” said BYU director of golf Todd Miller. “I haven’t seen that in the 15 years I’ve been coaching."
Shelley, who shot 1-over par in the first round, moved to 3-under for the event and sits in a tie for 18th going into the final round tomorrow.
After shooting 11-under-par in the second round, Arizona (275-277—552) is 24-under for the tournament and holds a three-shot lead over the New Mexico (281-274—555) who is 21-under entering the final 18-holes. BYU sits in third place 13-shots off the pace at 11-under (285-280—565), followed by Fresno State (281-286—567) and Washington State (290-281—571) who round out the top-5.
Cole Ponich (71-73—144) sits just outside the top-25 after a second round 73 which puts him at even par through 36-holes. Zac Jones (75-71—146) and David Timmins (70-76—146) are each 2-over par and tied for 40th heading into the final round on Saturday.
“We got more birdie putts to drop today which helped our team climb into contention,” said BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank.” We need to put together a quick start tomorrow with some early birdies to put some pressure on the leaders.”
Elijah Turner, who is competing in the tournament as individual, is one shot back of Timmins after rounds of 75-72—147.
The Cougars tee off Saturday at 8:30 a.m. HST for the final round. Live scoring will be available at golfstat.com.
