PGA Tour veteran Daniel Summerhays joins men's golf coaching staff
PROVO, Utah — BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank today announced the addition of 2007 All-American and PGA Tour veteran Daniel Summerhays to the men's golf coaching staff.
“Daniel Summerhays was as fine a student athlete as I’ve seen in my 30-years at BYU,” said Brockbank. “He was at the top of his class both academically and athletically and will be a great example and mentor for the guys on our team.”
As a volunteer assistant coach, Summerhays will be involved in practices, team activities and will assist in other coaching responsibilities.
“Daniel has an unmatched work ethic which he applies to everything he does,” said BYU director of golf Todd Miller. “He has always been willing to put in extra effort to achieve his goals which I know will rub off on our student athletes.”
Summerhays played three seasons at BYU before joining the Nationwide Tour and later the PGA Tour. In 39 events as a Cougar, he left his mark on the BYU golf program recording 27 top-25 finishes, 16 top 10s, 11 top 5s and a win at the 2007 PING Cougar Classic.
In 2006-07, Summerhays concluded his collegiate career with a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Championships and was one of ten golfers to earn first-team PING All-American honors. He was also named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District First-Team with a 3.91 GPA in the Marriott School finance program. Summerhays graduated magna cum laude with a degree in finance from the BYU Marriott School of Management in 2008.
After becoming the first amateur to win on the Nationwide Tour by capturing the 2007 Nationwide Children's Hospital Invitational, Summerhays decided to forgo his final year of eligibility and join the then Nationwide Tour for the 2007-08 season. He would go on to play in 215 PGA Tour events between 2010 and 2020 making 128 cuts, tallying 46 top-25 finishes, 19 top 10s, a third place and two second-place finishes. Summerhays was inducted into the BYU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2018.
He currently resides in Kaysville, Utah with his wife, Emily, and their four children.
