Lundell selected to compete at NCAA Regionals

INDIANAPOLIS – The NCAA Division 1 Men’s Golf Committee selected BYU’s Carson Lundell as the first individual to compete in the Cle Elum, Washington Regional on May 17-19 at Tumble Creek Golf and Country Club.

Lundell, who was named All-WCC First Team on Monday, was one of just five selected to compete at the Cle Elum regional. The field will also include 70 golfers from the 14 teams selected to compete at Tumble Creek. The top-3 teams at the regional are No. 7 Wake Forest, No. 8 Pepperdine and No. 17 Florida.

The top-5 finishing teams and low-scoring individual from each regional will advance to compete at the NCAA Championships, held at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona on May 28-June 2. Five other NCAA regionals will be played in Tallahassee, Florida, Kingston Springs, Tennessee, Noblesville, Indiana, Stillwater, Oklahoma and Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Lundell becomes the first BYU individual men’s golfer to compete at an NCAA regional since Zac Blair and Justin Keiley did so at the Stanford regional in 2012. Keiley finished tied for 27th at 1-over while Blair, who is currently playing on the PGA Tour, came in sixth at 8-under.

While Lundell has enjoyed consistent success throughout the season, the junior from Alpine, Utah has played his best golf down the stretch. In April, he finished in the top-3 in all three of the tournaments he played, including two first-place finishes. Lundell also posted scores in the 60s in seven of the nine rounds he played.

At the prestigious Western Intercollegiate at Pasatiempo Golf Course on April 12-14, Lundell shot 68-66-72—205 (-5) to finish tied for first. Two week later, April 23-24, he tied for first again at the PING Cougar Classic with rounds of 68-67-68— 203 (-13).

The following week at the WCC Championships, Lundell increased his streak of rounds in the 60s to five straight and finished tied for 3rd at the WCC Championship with rounds of 68-67-71—206 (-10). Lundell wrapped up the month of April by being named All-WCC First Team. He is currently No. 65 in Golfstat’s top-250 player rankings.
