Cougars in third with one round left at Saint Mary’s Invitational

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — BYU men’s golf is in third place after carding a second-round 278 (-6) Tuesday at the Saint Mary’s Invitational.

“We had another solid round today,” BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said. “We need to warm up the putters and get off to a better start tomorrow though if we want to make a run.”

Peter Kuest and Rhett Rasmussen paced the Cougars Tuesday by firing rounds of 68 (-3). Kuest posted five birdies and an eagle on the day while Rasmussen recorded a team-high six birdies. Kuest heads into tomorrow’s final round in fourth place, just two strokes behind current leader Seth Taylor of Coastal Carolina, while Rasmussen sits tied for 14th.

Cole Ponich is also tied for 14th after carding his second consecutive 70 (-1) in Tuesday’s second round. Kelton Hirsch shot a one-over 72 to finish tied for 24th, followed by Carson Lundell, who is tied for 47th after posting a four-over 75. Individual competitor Brock Stanger is also tied for 47th, carding a 73 (+2) Tuesday.

Arizona shot a second-round low 275 (-9) to move past BYU into second place, leading the Cougars by just one stroke. Colorado State currently sits atop the leaderboard with a six-stroke lead over the second-place Wildcats. WCC foes Saint Mary’s and San Francisco are in fifth and tied for sixth places, respectively, followed by Pacific, which is in 16th. In-state rival Utah is tied for 11th.
