Cougars in lead after day one of Pate Intercollegiate

VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. — Consecutive rounds under-par from three different Cougars led BYU men’s golf to finish day one of the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate in first place.

“We finished strong today,” BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said. “We need to come out again tomorrow and stay aggressive.”

Rhett Rasmussen, Carson Lundell and Peter Kuest each shot in the 60’s in rounds one and two Monday to pace BYU. Rasmussen currently sits in fourth place individually after posting a 69 (-1) and 65 (-5). Lundell carded a 68 (-2) and 67 (-3) to end the day tied for fifth, followed by Kuest, who sits in ninth place after shooting a 69 (-1) and 67 (-3) in the first two rounds.

Kelton Hirsch also ended the day with the Cougars' fourth top-10 score, posting a combined 137 (-3) Monday to finish tied for tenth. Cole Ponich rounded out the scoring for BYU and is currently tied for 33rd after carding a 145 (+5) through the first two rounds.

As a team, the Cougars shot a combined 542 (-18) Monday, giving them a two-stroke lead over second-place Colorado State. Auburn, Minnesota and the University of Alabama Birmingham round out the top-five heading into tomorrow’s third and final round.
