Cougars in fifth after second round of John Burns
LIHUE, Hawai’i — No. 31 BYU men’s golf sits in fifth place after the second round of the John Burns Intercollegiate on Friday evening.
"We started poorly and made a lot of mistakes early," BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said, "but fortunately we made some birdies on the back nine and we were able bounce back and shoot under par after our poor front nine. Hopefully we can have our best round tomorrow."
The Cougars fired a team score of 286 (-2) on Friday to move to -6 for the tournament. BYU ended the first nine shooting +7 as a team, followed by shooting -9 on the back nine.
No. 49 UNLV still leads the field of teams, shooting -2 on Friday to move to -21 overall. In-state foe Utah sits in seventh place, with West Coast Conference foe No. 37 Saint Mary’s tied for eighth.
Patrick Fishburn and Peter Kuest fired a pair of 70s on Friday and are both at -5 after 36 holes of the 54-hole event. Fishburn carded a 38 on the front nine, followed by a team-low 32 on the back nine, while Kuest fired 36-34. Both are tied for ninth place.
Rhett Rasmussen shot +2 (74) in round two and is tied for 47th place at +2, while CJ Lee shot even par to move to 52nd place at +3 after two rounds. Kelton Hirsch is tied for 63rd place at +5.
Spencer Dunaway and Chad Hardy, who are competing as individuals, are tied for 60th place and 101st place, respectively.
The Cougars will compete in the final round of the John Burns Intercollegiate on Saturday. Play will begin in a shotgun start at 11 a.m. MT. Links to live stats can be found on the BYU men's golf page.
