Day 2 Recap

LIHU'E, Hawai'i - Seniors Jordan Rodgers and Cole Ogden led BYU men's golf to an 11th-place finish at the John H. Burns Intercollegiate on Friday.

"We started off really well today, but we weren't able to shoot how we needed to," BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said. "We got our highest score of the week, but it still wasn't enough to push us up. There were definitely some improvements in the last two rounds, but we have to find a way to keep some more of our shots. Having a quick turnaround next week will hopefully be for our benefit."

The Cougars had their best round on the final day, totalling 294. Their finish in 11th place was 12 strokes ahead of West Coast Conference foe Santa Clara, who ended in a tie for 14th place. No. 23 California won its fifth-straight tournament, finishing at 12-under-par, which was seven strokes ahead of No. 31 New Mexico in second place.

Ogden improved throughout the three rounds, moving up in the rankings after each round. He shot a team-low 71 in the final round to climb up 11 spots to a tie for 23rd place (+5).

"My first day I didn't play very well, but my last two days I played really solid," Ogden said. "I think all of us individually have something we can take from this tournament. We have to focus on the postiive and try to move on. I finished on a pretty positive note, so hopefully I can continue to build on that."

Rodgers dropped six places to a tie for 23rd, shooting five-over-par. Tommy Higham, who shot six-over-par, also dropped six spots to 27th.

Senior Mike Jurca made a big jump on the last day, shooting a 75 in the third round to move up seven places to a tie for 73rd (+17). Freshman Zach Pritchard also had his best round today, but he remained in 83rd place at 20-over-par.

The Cougars have a quick turnaround, playing Feb. 23-24 in the Jones Invitational in Valenica, California. Live stats will be available for that tournament on the BYU men's golf schedule page
