BYU moves up after the second round
LIHU'E, Hawai'i - A late push from senior Jordan Rodgers put BYU men's golf in 10th place after the second day of the John H. Burns Intercollegiate on Thursday.
"It was nice to see our seniors play well," BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said. "Cole stepped up and Jordan hung in there with a nice finish. We are still in a tough spot in 10th place, but I thought we fought to get a decent score, so I'm proud of them for that. It will be nice to come out and shoot better tomorrow to move up."
The Cougars have sole possession of 10th place (+25) at the end of the second round. No. 23 Cal continues to hold onto the top spot (-3), while West Coast Conference member Santa Clara stayed in 15th place. After the second day, BYU-Hawai'i dropped to 17th place (+55).
Rodgers led BYU in the second round, climbing 13 places to a tie for 17th (+3). He shot 73 in this round, making a big push at the end.
"My last two holes were the highlight of my day," Rodgers said. "It was really windy and very difficult out there today. I started off alright, but then had a rough patch. After that, it was a mental grind. I ended up finishing with a birdie and an eagle, which helped me individually and the team. I hope that tomorrow we can all go out there and shoot a score under par and move up."
Tommy Higham shot four-over-par and moved six places to a tie for 21st place. Another player moving up in the rankings was Cole Ogden, who totaled 73 in the second round to climb 26 spots to a tie for 34th (+6).
Dropping 11 places, Mike Jurca shot 14-over-par to be in a tie for 80th after the second round. Zach Pritchard moved a little bit to a tie for 83rd place, shooting 15-over-par.
The tournament will continue with the final round on Friday at 8:30 a.m. HST at the Wailua Golf Course. Live stats will be available on the BYU men's golf schedule page.
