Parkinson and Cougars get first win at Pacific Invitational
STOCKTON, Calif. - Sophomore Joe Parkinson led the BYU men's golf team to a first place finish after the final round of the Pacific Invitational on Saturday.
"I thought we played great and it was a great way to get our first win of the season," BYU men's golf assistant coach Todd Miller said. "We haven't won in the Pacific Invitational since 2006, so it was good for us."
The 12-team tournament was the first college win for Parkinson, who was first in all three rounds, and it was the first win of the season for the Cougars. Parkinson finished the tournament 13-under-par with a third-round score of 70 and four birdies, including one in his last hole.
"Joe has been doing well all season, and it's not easy getting your first college win in golf," Miller said. "He had a great tournament and I'm very proud of him."
First-place BYU completed the tournament 26-under-par, seven strokes ahead of second-place, Santa Clara, who finished 19-under-par.
Senior Justin Keiley and junior Jordan Rodgers finished in the top five out of 60 players. Tied in second, Keiley completed the final round at eight-under-par with five birdies, while Rodgers moved up five spots to tie in fifth place at six-under-par. Rodgers carded a team-best score of 67 in the final round and had a total of seven birdies, four of which came in the first four holes.
Parkinson (17), Rodgers (16) and Keiley (14) finished in the top three with the most birdies in the tournament.
Stephen Archibald tied in 34th place at five-over-par, which included a birdie and an eagle. Jordan Hammer tied for 46th place to finish nine-over-par with three birdies in the round.
West Coast Conference participants Santa Clara, St. Mary's and Pacific finished in second, fifth and tied in sixth, respectively.
"The guys know what they have to do individually to get better," Miller said. "They'll be practicing over the winter to improve individually and help the team perform better in the spring."
The Cougars end their fall season with this win and look to capitalize on their experience when they return to action on Jan. 27 for the Arizona Collegiate tournament.
