PROVO -- After a close five-set match at Wyoming on Oct. 17 the BYU women’s volleyball team (13-12, 7-6 MWC) came out strong at the Smith Fieldhouse, downing the Cowgirls (12-17, 2-12 MWC) 3-0.

“We were patient and kept chipping away at them,” BYU head coach Shay Goulding said. “Kiana [Rogers] has been doing better and better and she was a key player in getting a variety of our players a number of swings.”

Senior rightside hitter Kayla Walker led the Cougars with 10 kills on the night, with Christina Measom and Nicole Warner each tallying nine kills. Warner hit at .692 percent while Morgan Lloyd Sorensen and Melissa Lake Wright had 11 and 10 digs, respectively.

The Cougars started out set one with Measom slamming down the ball in the middle of the court, followed by a Wyoming hitting error to put the Cougars up 2-0. The Cowgirls came back with a 3-0 run of their own, followed by ties at four, five, seven, eight and nine. The Cougars gradually chipped away at the score the rest of the set, maintaining the lead until taking the set 25-21.

Carpenter led the Cougars in kills in set one with four while Nicole Warner hit at .500 with three kills and Walker had three kills as well. Melissa Lake Wright had an impressive eight digs in set one.

Walker started out tallying three of the first six points off of kills. After two BYU service errors, the Cougars went on 5-0 run, causing Wyoming to call a timeout. Coming out of the timeout Wyoming scored its third point with the Cougars up 6-3. BYU posted a 4-0 run ending at 14-8, thinking a six-point lead would put away the set, but the Cowgirls thought differently.

Wyoming then posted three 3-0 runs to knot the score at 20. With two kills and a block from Measom, the Cougars tallied a 5-0 run to win the second set 25-20. Measom and Walker both posted six kills apiece to lead the Cougars in kills in the second set.

Set three began with Measom once again tallying the first kill, followed by a Wyoming hitting error. The Cougars scored in increments of two with the Cowgirls sneaking one or two points in every two points. The teams played in this fashion until Wyoming chalked up its 13th point, followed by two kills by Phillips, giving the Cougars the lead at 19-13.

With three of the last four kills going to senior Stephanie Lau, the Cougars won the set (25-19) and match (3-0).

The Cougars will next face Colorado State in their last home game of the season Saturday at 7 p.m. in the Smith Fieldhouse as they honor the seniors.

Two Final Home Matches

Image

PROVO -- After a disappointing week on the road, the BYU women’s volleyball team (12-12, 6-6) will host its last two home matches of the season with Wyoming (12-16, 2-11) on Thursday at 7 p.m. and Colorado State (20-4, 12-1) on Saturday at 7 p.m. in the Smith Fieldhouse.

“Our team is ready to finish strong at home and to show our fans that we are a dynamic and talented team,” said BYU head coach Shay Goulding. “Our fans have been great and have just gotten better and better; surely they will play a big role in our home court advantage. We have made some big improvements offensively lately with some girls hitting for some high numbers.”

The last time BYU faced Wyoming the Cougars barely squeaked by in five sets, beating the Cowgirls 3-2.

“Wyoming's record this year is deceiving,” said Goulding. “They are actually a very persistent team that plays scrappy defense and runs a solid offense. I expect that Thursday's match will be an exciting one.”

Colorado State also beat the Cougars on its home court on Oct. 15, sweeping BYU in three sets.

“Colorado State will come into the Smith Fieldhouse this year with an impressive record, but the team is determined to defend their court and to win on Saturday,” said Goulding.

The last time out BYU lost to TCU for the second time this season on the road in three sets (25-12, 25-18, 25-18). Senior rightside hitter Kayla Walker led the Cougars in kills with eight, also tallying eight digs. Transfer Camilla Phillips chalked up seven kills hitting at .333 while Christina Measom tallied five blocks. Libero Melissa Lake Wright tallied a season-high 20 digs, also tying her career-high.

Last Saturday the Cougars took on the Lobos in Albuquerque, N.M. and were also taken down in three sets. Sophomore Christie Carpenter led the Cougars in kills with 14, hitting at .407 percent and chalking up six digs. Walker had 11 kills and six digs while freshman Nicole Warner had eight kills at .636 percent. Libero Morgan Lloyd Sorensen led the back row with nine digs.

“The biggest factor keeping us from success on the road last week was missing serves,” said Goulding. “We will make adjustments this week in practice with the intent of keeping us aggressive on the service line and confident enough to make crucial serves under the pressure of a match.”

Thursday’s match will be broadcast LIVE on BYU Radio and Saturday’s match will be broadcast LIVE on BYUTV.
