Cougars Defeated on the Road

ALBUQUERQUE -- New Mexico (18-8, 9-5 MWC) brought its best game to the court Saturday to take down the BYU women’s volleyball team (12-12, 6-6 MWC) in three sets (23-25, 17-25, 23-25).

"We played really well, but missed nine of our serves," said BYU head coach Shay Goulding. "We just didn't score well when we had the ball, we couldn't put them out of their systems."

Sophomore Christie Carpenter led the Cougars in kills with 14, hitting at .407 percent and chalking up six digs. Senior rightside hitter Kayla Walker had 11 kills and six digs while freshman Nicole Warner had eight kills at .636 percent. Libero Morgan Lloyd Sorensen led the back row with nine digs.

"I was pleased with the performances of Christie Carpenter, Camilla Phillips and Nicole Warner," said Goulding. "They hit very well tonight and brought up our hitting percentage significantly from last game."

New Mexico stared out with a kill, a BYU attack error and a service ace to begin set one on a 3-0 run. The Cougars were unable to catch up the entire set, coming within at least two points, but lost set one 23-25 where the game could have been in favor of the Cougars were it not for the four service errors. Walker had an impressive seven kills during the set while Carpenter had five.

Set two looked better for the Cougars to begin, but back-to-back 3-0 and 5-0 Lobo runs ending at 15-6 set the Cougars back again, unable to retaliate. BYU tallied four service errors again in set two along with three attack errors, falling 17-25.

In the same fashion of the previous two sets, New Mexico stared out set three with the first two points, however a service error allowed the Cougars to start scoring points early against the Lobos. Camilla Phillips had three-consecutive kills to bring the score to 5-7 in favor of the Lobos.

Walker then spiked the ball to the floor to achieve the first tie of the game at nine. The Cougars continued to fight, knotting the score at nine, 10, 11, 12, 16 and 17, but a 3-0 Lobo run left the Cougars trailing the rest of the set, losing the set and match 23-25, 0-3.

New Mexico’s Lisa Meeter had a double-double with 13 kills hitting at .545 and 11 digs for the Lobos.

The BYU women’s volleyball team will return to the Smith Fieldhouse for its last two home games of the season on Thursday at 7 p.m. against Wyoming and Saturday at 7 p.m. against Colorado State.

Cougars Travel to TCU and New Mexico

Image

PROVO -- After winning two home matches against Utah Valley and UNLV last week, the BYU women’s volleyball (12-10, 6-4) team hits the road to take on TCU on Thursday at 7 p.m. CT and New Mexico on Saturday at 7 p.m. MT in vital Mountain West Conference matches.

“We are playing one game at a time,” said BYU head coach Shay Goulding. “TCU is on a roll and feeling good about themselves. They are going to have their crowd behind them, but they are going to see a completely different team in us than they saw last time.”

The Cougars played TCU at home on Oct. 10, losing in three, their second conference loss of the season. The Horned Frogs boast a 21-5 overall record and a 10-2 record in the MWC.

BYU played the Lobos at home on Thursday, Oct. 8, sweeping UNM in three. New Mexico has since earned a 16-8, 7-5 MWC record.

“New Mexico also has a good crowd that will be behind them, but if we play them like we did last time, we’ll come out on top,” said Goulding.

The last time out, BYU defended the Smith Fieldhouse to finish off the month of October with two 3-1 victories.

On Tuesday the Cougars took on Utah Valley University with Christie Carpenter leading the way with 12 kills while Camilla Phillips tallied career highs in both kills (10) and blocks (seven). Melissa Lake Wright tallied 16 digs in the libero position and setter Kiana Rogers had her eighth double-double of the season with 38 assists and 11 digs.

On Thursday the Cougars welcomed the UNLV Rebels to the court, donning pink uniforms in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Kayla Walker recorded 13 kills and added 10 digs, giving her six double-doubles on the season. Casey Speredon-Thurston and Christina Measom added nine kills apiece, while Melissa Lake-Wright’s 18 digs marked her fourth-straight match in double-digits. Freshman Nicole Warner also boasted a .857 hitting percentage off of six kills and no errors.

The match against TCU will be broadcast LIVE on The Mtn. at 7 p.m. CT and live stats are available for both matches via GameTracker.
