LAS VEGAS -- On the road the BYU women’s volleyball team improved its record (8-7, 3-1) by defeating the UNLV Rebels 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-21).
“I was proud of our girls sticking to our game plan,” said BYU head coach Shay Goulding. “UNLV did not bring their best game, but I was pleased that we played well and aggressively.”
Senior rightside hitter Kayla Walker led the Cougars with 14 kills, nine digs and seven blocks – including two solo blocks on the afternoon. Christina Measom, Christie Carpenter and Camilla Phillips each added six kills while Nicole Warner had five. Setter Kiana Rogers had 30 assists and nine digs while Morgan Lloyd Sorensen had 10 digs.
“We have been struggling on the outside lately and it was nice to see Christie and Camilla step up and play well,” said Goulding.
The Cougars started out set one with a 4-1 run, sparked by Warner having the first kill on the afternoon. After a 3-1 run by the Rebels, BYU called a timeout at 13-9. The Cougars came out of the timeout running with three UNLV attack errors, a kill from Measom and two BYU blocks to put the score up 19-9 before the Rebels could once again get a sideout. After trading points, the Cougars were on top after an attack error on UNLV ended set one 25-17.
The largest UNLV lead of the match came in set two at 6-4. The score was knotted eight times in the first 11 points before the Cougars sparked a 10-1 run led by Rogers back to serve, five Rebel hitting or handling errors; as well as BYU blocks, a service ace by Rogers and kills from Walker (two) and Warner (one). The Rebels were able to score three more points in the set off of two BYU errors and a kill. BYU finished off the set 25-17, identical to set one.
Starting fast in set three, BYU posted a 6-2 run, once again taking advantage of UNLV errors and posting two kills of their own. The Rebels couldn’t keep up with the Cougars’ balanced play. The team tallied kills from a variety of different players including Warner, Phillips, Walker, Christie Carpenter and Measom to polish off set three 25-21, winning the match 3-0.
“One player that was consistent with her serving tonight was Chelsea Goodsell,” said Goulding. “She strung some points together and served well under a lot of pressure.”
The Cougars will return back to the Smith Fieldhouse for a pair of conference matches against New Mexico on Thursday at 7 p.m. MT and TCU on Saturday at 6 p.m. MT.

PROVO -- After dropping a close one to Utah Saturday, the BYU women’s volleyball team will be back in the Smith Fieldhouse to host North Dakota State Tuesday at 7 p.m.
“North Dakota State is a great team,” said BYU head coach Shay Goulding. “They are coming off seven-straight wins and are excited for the opportunity to compete with us in the Smith Fieldhouse. Our girls are determined to win at home and will treat them with the respect they deserve by being prepared, focused and ready to win.”
Tuesday will mark the first meeting between the two teams.
Saturday the Cougars will also face conference foe, UNLV, in Las Vegas.
“UNLV is a strong program that has gotten better every year,” said Goulding. “It is important that we go down and win the serve and serve-receive battle. A win in Las Vegas will be crucial for a good position at the Mountain West title.”
BYU leads the UNLV-BYU series 21-6, with the Rebels taking three of the last four matches.
The last time out at Utah on Saturday in front of a record-high 1,747 fans, the Utes creeped by the Cougars in five. Senior rightside hitter Kayla Walker came out with 19 kills and 11 digs on the night, her fourth double-double of the season. Camilla Phillips had a career-high eight kills while Kiana Rogers posted 41 assists. Morgan Lloyd Sorensen held up the back row with 21 digs as Christina Measom had a career-high 11 blocks, the highest for any Cougar this season.
