No. 18 BYU Dominates TCU in Sweep

Image

FORT WORTH -- In a dominating performance, the No. 18 BYU women's volleyball team made short work of the TCU Horned Frogs Saturday night, winning 30-22, 30-25, 30-20 in Fort Worth. With their 14th sweep of the season, the Cougars improved to 20-4 overall and 10-3 in the Mountain West Conference.

"I'm very happy that we were able to rebound and find our identity again," said BYU head coach Jason Watson, whose team suffered just its fourth loss of the season at New Mexico Friday night. "We progressed throughout the match and stayed composed. This was exactly the kind of performance we needed to feel good about the push we need to make to the postseason in the month of November."

Chelsea Goodman posted her 15th double-double of the year, which leads the MWC, with 14 kills and 11 digs, while Rachel Dyer also posted double-digit kills with 10 and Janvier Beaumont led BYU in digs with 17. The Cougars posted 12.5 team blocks in the three-game match, paced by five each from Dyer and Lindsy Hartsock. As a team, BYU hit .303 while allowing TCU just a .034 mark.

The Cougars got off to a quick start in game one, jumping out to an early 6-1 lead on the strength of two blocks and Goodman's serve. The Horned Frogs stormed back to make it 8-7 but BYU denied TCU the chance to tie things up, instead putting together an 8-2 spurt to go up 16-9. The Horned Frogs tried again with four straight points to get to within three, but the Cougars reeled off seven scores of their own to take a commanding 24-14 lead on the way to a 30-22 win. BYU hit a blistering .471 in the game with 17 kills and only one error combined to go along with six team blocks.

TCU took its first lead of the match early in game two with an 8-0 run to go up 9-4. However, a block by Dyer and Erica Lott ended the Cougar scoring drought and sparked a 5-0 BYU run capped by a kill from Kim Sorensen to knot the game at 9-9 and force a Horned Frog timeout.

A battle ensued as the two teams traded points until BYU took control with a 7-0 run to take a 19-13 led. However, just when it looked like the Cougars would run away with it, TCU came up with some magic of its own with five straight points to earn a chance to tie at 18-19. But instead Goodman came up with a huge kill on the leftside to preserve the Cougar advantage. Two plays later, Lott did the same thing on the right to keep BYU going. While the game stayed tight from there, the Cougars were never truly threatened again while posting a 30-25 win.

Hartsock scored BYU's first two points of game three with kills straight down the middle, but TCU put the pressure on with an early lead. The Cougars tied it up at 8-8 thanks to back-to-back Horned Frog miscues and then took the lead on an emphatic kill from Goodman. With their backs against the wall, the Horned Frogs continued to be plagued by errors as BYU stayed in system and applied constant pressure both offensively and defensively while widening the gap to 15-8. It was a lead the Cougars would never relinquish in cruising to the 30-20 win.

BYU will now return home for the Cougars' final two home matches of the season as they take on Nevada Thursday night at 5 p.m. and Wyoming Saturday night at 7 p.m. in the Smith Fieldhouse.

Road Swing Up Next For No. 18 BYU Volleyball

Image

PROVO -- The No. 18 BYU women's volleyball team will hit the road this weekend as the Cougars travel to face New Mexico on Friday at 7 p.m. MT and TCU on Saturday at 7 p.m. CT in more Mountain West Conference action.

"This is a challenging weekend for our team," said BYU head coach Jason Watson. "We need to be prepared to go on the road and face two very competitive volleyball programs. November is a crucial month as teams vie for postseason opportunities. Every match we have left is critical to our postseason expectations."

With a 19-3 overall record and 9-2 MWC mark, BYU is currently tied for second place in the league standings with Colorado State with five regular-season league matches remaining, including a Nov. 17 showdown at CSU. With all of their starters back in the lineup, the Cougars will look to set themselves up for postseason play over the next three weeks with wins down the stretch.

In preparing for postseason action, BYU will benefit from the play of several team and MWC leaders. Of the seven overall statistical categories tracked by the league, Cougar players lead the league in four of them (hitting percentage -- Rachel Dyer; kills -- Chelsea Goodman; assists -- Amy Schlauder; points -- Chelsea Goodman) and are second in one other (blocks -- Lindsy Hartsock). Goodman is also ranked seventh in aces. BYU packs one-two punches in two categories as Dyer and Hartsock rank first and second, respectively, in hitting percentage; and Goodman and Lott rank first and second, respectively, in kills

The Lobos are 7-17 overall this season and 3-9 so far in Mountain West Conference play with their lone road win coming at Air Force. Sophomore outside hitter Jeanne Fairchild leads the Lobo attack with 3.01 kills per game. Sophomore libero Gayle Tripp ranks fourth in the league with 4.36 digs per game while the UNM block is led by sophomore Joelle Ingram at 1.11 per game. As a team, the Lobos hit .144 while allowing opponents a .207 mark.

The Horned Frogs are 17-10 overall and 5-7 so far this season in Mountain West Conference play, including a five-game loss at BYU earlier this season. Junior middle blocker Anna Vaughn currently leads TCU and is seventh in the league with 3.54 kills per game on .350 hitting, fourth in the conference. Vaughn also leads the team in blocks averaging 1.04 bpg. Libero Calli Corley is third in the MWC with 4.53 digs per game. As a team, TCU hits .236 on the year while holding opponents to a .192 mark. The Horned Frogs also lead the conference in aces as four of their players rank in the top ten in league play.

Fans will be able to follow live stats of both matches via GameTracker, which is available by going to the schedule page of the BYU women's volleyball homepage at http://www.byucougars.com/volleyball_w/. The match is also scheduled to be broadcast live over the Internet to all CSTV XXL subscribers.
