PROVO -- The BYU women’s gymnastics team (6-1-1) will finally kick off their home schedule after spending the last three weeks on the road. Competing in the Smith Fieldhouse, the Cougars will take on No. 16 Southern Utah, No. 20 Iowa State and Utah State.
“The kids are really excited,” BYU head coach Brad Cattermole said. “When you’re on the road for three meets in the beginning, it’s fun and new but we’re really pumped to be home this weekend. We haven’t had an all-around great performance yet, we’ve had good events but we’re capable of putting together a solid all-around meet.”
The Cougars have experienced great success in the opening weeks of competition with two wins over ranked opponents, Denver and Arizona, as well as a tie with No. 11 Kent State. BYU’s only loss came against No. 3 Georgia in their first meet of the season at Denver.
Facing two top 25 opponents and the up-and-coming Aggies will be no easy task. The Thunderbirds of SUU will enter the meet with the highest ranking and looks to extend a five-meet winning streak against BYU. Despite being the smallest of the four schools competing, the Thunderbirds will be the team to beat having already posted a huge win over then No. 5 UCLA.
Iowa State has begun their season in the opposite fashion of the Cougars as this is the Cyclone’s first road meet of the season. With home wins over No. 15 Auburn and Missouri, and one home loss to No. 11 Nebraska, Iowa State will be hungry for a victory in Provo.
The Cougars have already faced the Aggies of Utah State. The Aggies are 1-4 right now with losses against SUU, Arizona, BYU and San Jose State. However, the Utah State team that was plagued by injuries last season is only a memory and the Aggies have posted strong scores thus far this season.
