Cougars Tie for Second at Dick McGuire

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M (Sept. 12,2006) -- The No. 28 BYU women's golf team tied for second place at the Dick McGuire Invitational on Tuesday.

The Cougars wrapped up the McGuire Invitational scoring the lowest round of the day 291(-1). BYU waged a balanced attack with four of the five starters shooting one round under par and the fifth starter freshman Daphne Vines was strong and steady with three consecutive rounds of one over par (74).

"This is a solid start for our team," said head coach Sue Nyhus. "We beat four teams polled above us in the preseason coaches poll. Our MWC conference is really strong and competitive. This year is going to be an exciting conference race."

BYU beat out top-ranked teams No. 26 University of South Carolina, No. 11 University of Florida, No. 19 Texas A&M and tied No. 17 UNLV.

Ashley Childers, who won the first qualifying event, also led the team in scoring finishing with a four under par. Childers had a round career low of 69. She finished the invitational tied for 13th.

Vines finished tied for 18th with 222. At 223, Natalia Jimenez and Rachel Newren both tied for 22nd. Alexis Edwards finished with 227, which tied for 32nd. Freshman Hannah Summerhays, playing as an individual, finished at 232.

Catherine Matranga from TCU won the event with a 214 (-5).

ASU won the Invitational with a -7 after a record-nine-under par in the second round.

The Cougars will go on to compete at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate hosted by the University of Denver on Sept 25-26.
