Day 1 Recap

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Despite a top-20 finish from junior Lea Garner, BYU women's golf finished in 12th place at the Dick McGuire Invitational on Tuesday.

"I thought we finished very well," head coach Carrie Roberts said. "We kind of focused on that. We could have had a better second round, but everyone played pretty well. We are hoping to be more consistent next week and to get a little bit better each round."

BYU dropped to a 12th place finish at 35-over-par after being in 10th place at the beginning of the day. Northwestern held on to its first place lead at eight-under-par to win the tournament. Fellow West Coast Conference member Pepperdine improved during the final round to seven-over-par and a fourth place finish, a jump from its seventh place finish after the first day.

Garner led the Cougars shooting two-over-par. She finished the tournament in a tie for 12th place individually after shooting 70, a tie for a career-low, in the third round.

Freshmen Sierra Harr and Kendra Dalton played well in their second collegiate tournament. Harr shot nine-over-par and finished in a tie for 44th place. Dalton finished not too far behind in a tie for 50th place, shooting 10-over-par.

Senior Maria Yacaman finished strong and shot 76 in the third round, ending in a tie for 60th place at 14-over-par. Junior Carly Oldroyd shot 20-over-par and ended tied for 76th.

Sophomore Annie Yang competed individually at this tournament. She shot 29-over-par and tied for 80th place.

BYU looks to bounce back at the Cougar Cup next week on Sept. 22-23 in Pullman, Washington.
